Week 7 - Corbans Art Workshop

Week 7 - School Trip to Corbans Art Workshop

Last week we had our trip to Corbans Art Workshop. We had a lot of fun and got to express our creativity in art. We liked using special water coloured pastels. The creatures we created were mythical or living animals.

Here are some of the pictures that Mrs Munro took on the day. (:

Week 6 - Cross Country Zones

In week 6, Room 19 was able to send 4 students out of the 9 students from year 5 to the Cross Country Zones. Mrs Kellie was there to take some pictures of Karlyle, Caeser, Sasha and Gabi when competing against the best runners from several school in our Zone.

Particularly outstanding was Gabi's performance, who came 4th in this race.

Well done to all of you!

Week 6 - Speech Finals

Firstly, a huge congratulations for all Room 19 students. All of them have found a speech topic, planned it, written it and presented it to the class. The work 4 weeks has come to its conclusion and the year 5 students have learnt a lot about persuasive writing and how to write and give a speech. It takes a lot of confidence to stand in front of the class with everyone's eyes on you and give a speak. Well done Room 19 for your great efforts. I am truly proud! I am sure all of you have grown through this process, and even if it is just the gain of the understanding that you can survive and even be confident when all eyes and ears are on you.

There were so many outstanding speeches. I would like to mention the two students who made it into the semi-finals: Donghyun with his humorous speech on why he shouldn't be selected for the speech finals, and Madeleine who chose the significant topic of Global Warming and presented it with outstanding confidence and expression.

It was a hard choice to decide who will go to the finals to compete against 13 other speakers from year 5 and 6. In the end, it was two students who made it into the finals due to their combination of excellent research and persuasive writing, presentation skills and confidence: Karlyle with his speech on 'Why is it better to live now than in the past' and Caeser with the topic 'Why teachers should get paid more'. They had to give their speech in front of 7 classes, our jury and a hand full of parents standing by themselves on stage. Just for bringing up the confidence to do this you already deserve the certificate given to you. Well done you two!

Term 3 - Week 3

Maths - Lets Introduce Fractions

This term, our big Maths topic is Fractions. In year five, the students are taking a big leap from understanding what a fraction is to integrating fractions into their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

This week, we spent some time reviewing our fractions concepts again so everyone is prepared for the leap into senior school Maths. Exciting!

In the picture below, you see Room 19 ordering fractions.

Fractions Art

We also did some fractions art, where the children cut out shapes from a paper to make symmetrical pattern. They then estimated what fraction of the paper they have cut out.

Week 4 - Cross Country

Cross Country was a big success for Room 19 with Karlyle coming 1st place for year 5 boys and Gabriella coming 2nd for year 5 girls. We had other great contestants from Room 19 making it into the top 10. We came first out of all year 5 classes. I am convinced that these amazing students display a great mixture of talent and a determined mindset. What can possibly go wrong with that?

We are wishing Karlyle, Gabi, Sasha and Caeser all the best when competing in Cross Country Zones as our 4 out of 10 year 5 students in week 6!

Enjoy the action shots taken on the day!
